The grieving family from Naduri Village, Macuata, faces an overwhelming tragedy while many celebrate Palm Sunday. Sakiusa Ravasua and a one-year-old child lost their lives in a horrific road accident that occurred along the Labasa-Nabouwalu highway on Friday night. The incident involved a rental vehicle driven by Ravasua, who allegedly attempted to overtake another car, resulting in a collision with an oncoming vehicle.
The one-year-old child sustained devastating injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Seaqaqa Health Centre. In addition to the fatalities, three other passengers from Ravasua’s vehicle were injured and treated at Labasa Hospital, while the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash received treatment and was later discharged.
Family member Sereima Taleimailodoni expressed her shock and devastation at the news, reflecting on the difficulty of accepting such a profound loss just before the holiday. Tragically, the father of the one-year-old is one of those currently in critical condition at the hospital. “We hope they will recover from this accident,” she expressed with a heart full of hope amidst sorrow.
Eyewitness Max Rayawa described the crash scene as horrifying, highlighting the emotional toll of witnessing the aftermath. The national road death toll now stands at 10 for the year, showing a decrease compared to 17 during the same period last year. This statistic brings to light ongoing efforts in road safety, though incidents like this serve as a somber reminder of the need for responsible driving practices.
Communities are urged to reflect on the importance of road safety, with hopes that the tragic loss of lives can inspire more awareness and action to prevent such heartbreaking incidents in the future. The support and unity of the community during this difficult time is essential as they strive to honor the memory of those lost while advocating for safer roads for everyone.
