Kamenieli Varo, a father of five, is feared to have drowned in New South Wales, specifically in the Murrumbidgee River near Yanco, on Sunday, November 3. NSW Police were alerted around 5:15 PM regarding a 32-year-old man who was missing in the river, prompting a rapid response from emergency services.
Authorities from the Murrumbidgee Police District, alongside NSW Ambulance, the SES, and the Volunteer Rescue Association, undertook a thorough search, but were unable to locate Mr. Varo. Their efforts were halted around 8 PM due to darkness and hazardous river conditions, with search operations resuming the following day. As of now, his body has not been recovered.
Reports suggest that Mr. Varo was swept underwater by the strong current, despite attempts by friends to rescue him. Originally from Navoci Village in Nadi, Fiji, Mr. Varo had moved to Australia in 2022 as part of the National Employment Centre’s Pacific Australia Labour Mobility (PALM) scheme, and was expecting to complete his four-year contract next year.
His wife, Mere Dawai, shared her sorrow, recounting their last conversation when Mr. Varo informed the family he was going for a picnic with friends. She expressed her heartache, revealing that he was eagerly looking forward to surprising them for Christmas. Reflections from Ms. Dawai highlighted Mr. Varo’s caring nature and his intention to build a house for the family after completing his contract.
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of how quickly circumstances can change. The heartfelt stories from Mr. Varo’s family underscore the deep bonds of love and community that remain, even in the face of unimaginable loss. As search efforts continue, there is hope that his remains will be found, providing the family some closure.
