A woman in her 70s has passed away following a vehicular accident on Viseisei Bypass Road in Vuda, Lautoka, on Sunday afternoon.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, the victim was a passenger in a vehicle operated by a 36-year-old suspect. Initial reports indicate that the suspect lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and collide with a post. The force of the impact caused the vehicle to swing back onto the road, where it struck another car.
The suspect is currently receiving treatment at Lautoka Hospital, while the driver of the second vehicle and his passenger were unharmed. SSP Divuana noted that speeding is believed to be a contributing factor in the accident and reiterated the importance of adhering to speed limits for everyone’s safety.
The victim’s family has chosen not to speak to the media, as it is reported that the suspect is related to them. Police statistics indicate that the current road death toll stands at 37, in contrast to 60 fatalities during the same time frame last year.
