A tragic accident occurred in New Plymouth, resulting in the death of an individual after their car crashed into a home on Riverside Drive in Merrilands. The incident took place around 9:15 am when emergency services received a report of the vehicle colliding with the residence.
Initially, Fire and Emergency reported that the driver had been rescued, with no other injuries reported. However, it was later confirmed that the driver had succumbed to injuries while trapped under the house. A person inside the home was taken to Taranaki Base Hospital with moderate injuries.
The rescue operation faced significant challenges as it took several hours to extricate the car due to its position. Additionally, power lines were brought down during the crash, complicating access to the driver. Emergency services, including three ambulances and a rapid response vehicle from St John, were dispatched to the scene.
Authorities have closed the road in the area and are advising motorists to avoid it to prevent delays while emergency services work.
