A heartbreaking incident has left the students of Balata College mourning the loss of 14-year-old Eliki Delai, who tragically died after slipping from a moving bus in Davota, Tavua. This event occurred around 7 a.m. while the bus was making its journey from Waikubukubu to Tavua town.

According to reports from the Fiji Police, Delai was trying to disembark at a stop intended for students from another school when the bus unexpectedly started moving. During his attempt to get back on board, he slipped and was struck by the vehicle, resulting in severe injuries. Emergency services rushed him to Tavua Hospital Mortuary, where he will undergo a post-mortem examination.

Eliki Delai was not just a student but a promising young soccer player, having represented the under 14 Tavua soccer team. His sudden passing has left a profound impact on his family, friends, and the wider community, highlighting the tragic loss of a bright young life.

This incident calls attention to the importance of road safety, echoing similar cases in the region, such as the distressing incident in Nadi where a 12-year-old student lost his life due to unsafe travel practices. These tragedies have sparked urgent discussions about the need for increased accountability among drivers and the importance of educating students about safe transportation.

As communities grieve, there is a glimmer of hope that these sorrowful events will inspire a renewed focus on improving road safety measures, particularly for young travelers who depend on safe transportation daily. In light of this tragedy, the community is encouraged to come together to support one another and advocate for better safety measures to help prevent such accidents in the future.
