A family is grieving the loss of their 10-year-old son, Kiliaoni Lili Qalotaki, whose body was discovered in the Navua River after he was swept away by strong currents while swimming on December 28. Kiliaoni, who was a student and an active member of his community, had been swimming with friends when the tragic incident occurred.
His father, Pastor Semi Qalotaki, shared the tragic circumstances surrounding his son’s final moments. Kiliaoni had initially been reluctant to swim but was persuaded by his friends when they mentioned that an adult would accompany them. Shortly after, the group ran back to the family home, panicked and said Kiliaoni had been taken by the current.
After a determined search effort involving the family, local community members, police, and the Fiji Navy lasting three days, Kiliaoni’s body was recovered, bringing some closure to the grieving family. Pastor Qalotaki expressed both sorrow for their loss and gratitude that his son’s remains were found, stating, “We are grateful and at peace knowing his body has been found and that he is with the Lord.”
Kiliaoni was fondly remembered for his playful spirit and leadership qualities among his peers, as well as his strong connection to their church community. The family had planned to celebrate the New Year together, including looking forward to fireworks sent by relatives from abroad, making his untimely death even more poignant.
Pastor Qalotaki thanked the local businesses, River Tubing and Jewel of Fiji, for their support during the search operation, highlighting the sense of community in times of crisis. Investigations by the police are ongoing, and a post-mortem examination has been carried out.
This tragic event reminds us of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing our loved ones. The strong support from the community in the search efforts illustrates the unity and compassion that can emerge in difficult times. While the family’s heartache is profound, they are surrounded by love and support as they navigate through this painful chapter of their lives.
