A tragic incident occurred in New Plymouth where one individual lost their life after becoming trapped inside a car that crashed into a home on Riverside Drive in Merrilands. Police reported that they were notified of the collision around 9:15 am.
Initially, Fire and Emergency services indicated that the driver had been rescued, and there were no injuries to anyone inside the house. However, it was later confirmed that a resident of the home sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Taranaki Base Hospital.
The driver, unfortunately trapped underneath the house due to the position of the vehicle, succumbed to their injuries. Fire and Emergency faced significant challenges in extricating the car, which required several hours and the use of a fire truck. Compounding the situation, fallen power lines caused by the crash obstructed access to the driver and led to power outages in the area.
In response, St John ambulances and support teams were dispatched to the scene, and police have closed the road to manage the emergency services’ response. Motorists have been advised to avoid the vicinity and expect delays as the situation unfolds.
This incident serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictability of road safety and the critical importance of adhering to safe driving practices. Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the deceased during this incredibly difficult time.
