A tragic incident occurred in Naituvatuvavatu Village, Wainibuka, where a 5-year-old girl was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross the Waisomi River. The girl was returning home with her 32-year-old aunt and seven other children after gathering edible lady fern when the accident took place.

The Turaga ni Koro of Naituvatuvavatu Village reported the situation to law enforcement. In response, the Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, confirmed that a team of three police officers was dispatched to assist in the search efforts. Unfortunately, due to poor visibility and adverse weather conditions, the search operation was temporarily halted but is slated to resume today.

ACPO Driu emphasized the necessity of parental oversight, especially during school holidays, urging parents to keep a closer eye on their children and prioritize spending quality time with them instead of attending social gatherings.

This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of safety measures and vigilance around water bodies, particularly for young children, to prevent similar tragedies from occurring in the future.

In summary, the search for the young girl continues, with hopes that safety practices will be reinforced among parents and the community.
