Tragically, a 5-year-old girl from Naituvatuvavatu village in Wainibuka was swept away by powerful river currents during an outing with fellow children and her aunt. The incident occurred while they were crossing the Waisomi river after gathering edible lady fern.
Local authorities were notified, and the village chief, known as the Turaga ni koro, reported the matter to the police. In response, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu confirmed that three police officers were deployed to assist in the search efforts. However, the search had to be paused due to darkness and adverse weather conditions, with plans to resume the following day.
ACPO Driu emphasized the importance of parental supervision during this season, urging parents to be more responsible and attentive to their children, particularly during school breaks. He highlighted the need for parents to prioritize spending quality time with their children instead of attending social gatherings.
This tragic event serves as a poignant reminder of the dangers that can arise in nature, particularly during the rainy season. It is a call to action for communities to prioritize safety and vigilance, ensuring that children are closely monitored while they explore the outdoors.
In times of tragedy, support and cooperation among community members can strengthen social ties and promote awareness regarding the safety of children. As the search continues, communities can come together to support the family and ensure that safety measures are in place for the future.
