A tragic incident occurred in Naituvatuvavatu village, Wainibuka, where a 5-year-old girl was swept away by strong river currents while crossing the Waisomi River. The girl was with seven other children and her 32-year-old aunt, returning from a trip to gather edible lady fern when the accident took place.

The situation was reported to the Police by the village leader, the Turaga ni koro. In response, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu stated that three police officers were dispatched to the scene to assist with the search efforts. Unfortunately, the search had to be suspended due to darkness and adverse weather conditions, with plans to resume the following day.

ACPO Driu emphasized the critical need for parental supervision during this time, particularly during school breaks. He urged parents to be vigilant and prioritize spending quality time with their children instead of attending gatherings, highlighting the responsibility adults have in ensuring their children’s safety.

While this incident is heart-wrenching, it serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and supervision in preventing similar tragedies. Communities are encouraged to come together during these times to support one another and foster safer environments for children.

In summary, the local authorities are taking decisive steps to locate the missing child, reflecting their commitment to community safety and parental responsibility.
