A family in Nadroga is grieving the tragic loss of 26-year-old Sakenasa Rakaira, who drowned while diving in the bay off Muka Village last week. His uncle, Sakiusa Koroicivi, shared that Rakaira had just returned from work on Thursday and had set out to catch fish. Unfortunately, a strong current swept him away, despite his efforts to save himself.
Search efforts were initiated after Rakaira went missing around 8 PM on Thursday, and his body was eventually recovered from Muka Bay reef at midday on Saturday. He leaves behind two young children, aged three and four, as well as a home in the village, highlighting the profound impact of this loss on his family.
Divisional Police Commander West, Senior Superintendent of Police Iakobo Vaisewa, provided further details on the incident, explaining that Rakaira was diving with a friend who advised him to stay in shallow waters due to inadequate fishing gear. However, the powerful current made it impossible for his friend to rescue him when he realized what was happening.
This incident marks a somber increase in drowning fatalities, with the death toll now at 53 for the year, two more than the same period last year.
While the circumstances are heartbreaking, it serves as a reminder of the dangers present in aquatic activities. Communities are encouraged to prioritize safety measures and seek proper training and equipment to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.
In light of this tragedy, the community can focus on honoring Rakaira’s hardworking spirit and commitment to his family, ensuring that his legacy lives on in their hearts.
Overall, this story highlights the importance of safety awareness when engaging in recreational activities, especially in challenging environments like the ocean.
