A tragic incident occurred in Naituvatuvavatu village, Wainibuka, where a 5-year-old girl was swept away by strong river currents yesterday. The child was crossing the Waisomi river along with seven other children and her 32-year-old aunt after returning from a trip to gather edible lady fern when the accident took place.
The village’s Turaga ni koro reported the event to the police, prompting a swift response. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu announced that three police officers were dispatched to assist in the search for the girl. Unfortunately, as darkness fell and weather conditions deteriorated, the search effort was suspended for the night but is set to resume today.
In light of this incident, ACP Driu emphasized the critical importance of parental supervision, particularly during the school holidays. He urged parents to take greater responsibility in keeping a watchful eye on their children and to prioritize family time over social gatherings during these vulnerable times.
This tragic event serves as a somber reminder of the unpredictable nature of nature and the precautions necessary to keep children safe. Instilling a sense of responsibility and vigilance in adults can help prevent such accidents in the future. Communities are encouraged to come together during such challenging times to support one another and ensure the safety of children, fostering closer familial bonds and vigilance as a collective effort.
Summary: A 5-year-old girl was swept away by the Waisomi river while crossing with other children and her aunt. The search for her has been temporarily suspended due to unfavorable conditions but will continue. Authorities are urging parents to supervise their children more closely during the school break.
