A tragic incident occurred in Naituvatuvavatu Village, Wainibuka, where a 5-year-old girl was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross the Waisomi River. The girl was with her 32-year-old aunt and seven other children, returning from a foraging trip for edible lady ferns when the accident happened.

The Turaga ni Koro of Naituvatuvavatu Village promptly reported the situation to the police. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, confirmed the dispatch of three officers to initiate a search for the child. Unfortunately, the search was suspended due to poor visibility and unfavorable weather conditions, but it is expected to resume today.

In light of this incident, ACPO Driu emphasized the critical need for parental supervision, especially during the school holidays. He urged parents to take greater responsibility for their children’s safety, advising them to spend quality time with their children rather than attending gatherings.

This serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of vigilance and active involvement in children’s activities, particularly in potentially hazardous environments like rivers and other natural water bodies.

In a hopeful context, the community’s response and the prompt involvement of local authorities signify a unified effort to protect and care for the village’s children. As the search continues, there is a collective hope that the girl is found safe.

Summary: A 5-year-old girl was swept away in the Waisomi River while returning from foraging with family and friends. The police commenced a search but had to pause due to poor weather. Officials emphasize parental responsibility during school holidays as the search resumes, demonstrating community solidarity in ensuring children’s safety.
