More than 30 Palestinians were reportedly killed and nearly 170 injured near a food distribution site in south Gaza on Sunday, according to local health authorities. Witnesses claimed that Israeli soldiers opened fire on those gathering for aid, while Israeli officials denied these allegations, asserting that their initial inquiries found soldiers did not target civilians.

In contrast, the U.S.-based Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) stated there were no deaths or injuries during the food distribution at their site in Rafah. The organization provided undated video footage to support its claims, although it did not receive independent verification.

The Hamas-controlled Gaza health ministry reported that the casualties were primarily caused by gunfire from Israeli positions, with many individuals suffering head or chest wounds. The International Committee of the Red Cross indicated that its field hospital in Rafah received 179 wounded patients, the highest recorded in a single incident at that facility since its establishment over a year ago.

The situation in Gaza remains dire as the United Nations warned that a majority of the 2 million inhabitants are at risk of famine, compounded by an 11-week Israeli blockade restricting aid into the region. The GHF recently launched its first distribution sites as a response to escalating hunger, but its methods have faced criticism from the UN and humanitarian organizations, which argue that it does not adhere to established humanitarian principles.

Previous incidents highlighted chaotic scenes around the distribution points, resulting in injuries and deaths as people rushed to collect much-needed supplies. Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN’s Palestinian relief agency, condemned the violence, stating, “aid distribution has become a death trap.”

With tensions rising, ceasefire talks between Israel and Hamas face challenges. Hamas expressed readiness to engage in negotiations, while Israel continues military operations aimed at dismantling Hamas’ infrastructure in response to ongoing attacks.

The situation reflects an urgent need for humanitarian support amidst the ongoing conflict, emphasizing the resilience of Gazans in seeking aid. International advocacy remains crucial to ensure a sustainable resolution and alleviate the humanitarian crisis. As diplomats work towards a ceasefire, there is hope that these efforts may bring lasting peace and improved conditions for those affected by the conflict.
