All five workers trapped at Codelco’s El Teniente copper mine have tragically been confirmed dead, according to a report from a regional prosecutor. This unfortunate news comes after rescue teams cleared over two dozen meters of collapsed underground passages, following a strong earthquake that struck the region last week.

On Sunday afternoon, Prosecutor Aquiles Cubillo confirmed that the last of the five trapped workers had been located, bringing the overall death toll from the incident to six, including one individual who lost their life during the collapse on Thursday evening.

The first worker was discovered on Saturday, and during the ongoing search, three more bodies were recovered on Sunday. Codelco, the mining company, has yet to comment on the recovery of the final worker.

This incident highlights the ongoing dangers associated with mining operations, particularly in areas prone to seismic activity. Previous reports have pointed to the urgency for enhanced safety protocols to protect miners in such hazardous environments. The tragedy underscores the need for comprehensive safety measures in the mining industry to ensure the protection and well-being of workers.

While the loss is profound, there is hope that this tragic event may catalyze improvements in safety regulations, ultimately promoting a safer working environment for all miners in the future. Community solidarity is vital during such challenging times, and ongoing discussions regarding safety standards and regulations could lead to vital changes in the industry’s practices.
