A man in his 30s tragically lost his life in a vehicle accident early yesterday morning near the Nasinu road junction shortly after 3 a.m. The victim was headed towards Suva when another vehicle, also driven by a man in his 30s, collided with his car.
Senior Superintendent of Police Mitieli Divuana, Director of Traffic, stated that investigations into the incident are ongoing. He emphasized the importance of alertness and vigilance among drivers. Despite continuous reminders from road safety stakeholders regarding safe driving practices, the number of traffic violations reported daily indicates that many individuals are not heeding these warnings.
Divuana noted that complacency is a significant factor contributing to accidents and the tragic loss of life. He urged all road users to adopt a more serious approach to road safety for their own well-being, especially as the festive season approaches.
As a point of perspective, while the road death toll currently stands at 46, this figure is an improvement, showing a decrease compared to 68 fatalities during the same period last year. This statistic highlights that there is potential for safer road conditions if all drivers commit to responsible behavior.
The ongoing emphasis on road safety serves as a hopeful reminder that community awareness and adherence to traffic rules can significantly reduce accidents and save lives. It is vital for everyone to unite in fostering a culture of safety on the roads, especially during the festive season when travel tends to increase.
