Ilisabeta Dravuni’s last words to her two sons before attending a church crusade in another village were simple yet profound: “Love each other and that’s enough drinking.” Tragically, later that evening, she received devastating news that both of her sons had been involved in a serious accident, resulting in the loss of one.

Upon arriving at Vunidawa Hospital, Dravuni learned that her younger son, Waisea Qaliyalewa, aged 20, had died, while her older son, Serupepeli Lalabalavu, 25, was transported to CWM Hospital. The news continued to worsen as she discovered that Serupepeli’s body was already at the morgue, leading to a heartbreaking day for the family.

The incident unfolded after the brothers indulged in alcohol at their home in Waitolu, Naitasiri, where an argument broke out. In the wake of this tragedy, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuana urged Fijians to act responsibly, emphasizing the importance of making safe choices, particularly regarding alcohol consumption.

This sorrowful story highlights the vital need for community awareness and responsible behavior, especially among young people. While the grief of Ilisabeta Dravuni and her family is profound, it serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of familial bonds. Through their loss, there is hope that other families might learn to prioritize love and communication, ultimately preventing similar tragedies in the future.
