A family of five is beginning the New Year in mourning following the tragic death of 10-year-old Kiliaoni Lili Qalotaki, whose body was discovered floating in the Navua River. His passing has cast a shadow over what should have been a joyful start to the year.
Kiliaoni had been swept away by strong currents while swimming with friends in the Raiwaqa River on December 28, a day that would ultimately change his family’s lives forever. His father, pastor Semi Qalotaki, recounted the heartbreaking story of how his son had been enjoying time with friends when they encouraged him to swim despite his initial reluctance.
The incident unfolded as the children were playing and trying to retrieve a rugby ball stuck on a roof. After some time spent cleaning and playing, Kiliaoni and his siblings returned home—but not before his friends persuaded him to join them for a swim, promising that an adult would accompany them. Just moments later, his friends returned in a panic, sharing that Kiliaoni had been taken by the river’s current.
After an extensive search that lasted three days and involved local volunteers, police, and the Fiji Navy, the family learned of the devastating discovery of Kiliaoni’s remains. Despite the overwhelming sadness, his father expressed a sense of relief and gratitude, saying, “This has been an incredibly difficult phase for us, but we are grateful and at peace knowing his body has been found and that he is with the Lord.”
Kiliaoni was remembered as a lively and mischievous boy who was deeply supportive of his church and a natural leader among his peers. His father shared that they had planned to celebrate the New Year with family in Suva and that Kiliaoni had been eagerly anticipating the firecrackers sent by relatives living abroad.
The community has rallied in support, with particular thanks given to the local tourist ventures, River Tubing and Jewel of Fiji, for assisting in the search efforts. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, while a post-mortem examination has already been completed.
While the loss is profound, the family’s faith and the outpouring of community support highlight the resilience and strength in adversity. They continue to honor Kiliaoni’s memory as they navigate this heartbreaking chapter in their lives.
