A tragic incident occurred in Naituvatuvavatu Village, Wainibuka, where a 5-year-old girl was swept away by strong currents while attempting to cross the Waisomi River. The young girl was with her 32-year-old aunt and seven other children, returning from a trip to gather edible lady fern when the accident happened.

Following the incident, the Turaga ni Koro of Naituvatuvavatu Village promptly reported the situation to local authorities. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, confirmed that three police officers were dispatched to aid in the search for the missing girl. Unfortunately, the operation was suspended due to poor visibility and adverse weather conditions but is scheduled to resume today.

ACPO Driu emphasized the critical need for parental supervision, especially during school holidays, urging parents to be more vigilant and spend quality time with their children instead of attending social gatherings.

This incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the importance of safety around waterways and the need for close supervision of children during recreational activities. It is a call to the community to prioritize safety and awareness, particularly during times when children are more prone to exploring their surroundings.

As the search continues, the hope remains that the community will come together in support as they face this challenging time. The incident encourages dialogue on safety measures and parental responsibilities, fostering a culture of care within the community.
