A tragic incident occurred involving a 12-year-old student from Sabeto, Nadi, who lost his life after being thrown from a moving vehicle. The young boy was reportedly one of several youths seated in the back tray of a carrier driving along Natadola. As the vehicle navigated through uneven terrain and potholes, the force caused the student to be ejected, resulting in his fall onto the asphalt road.

Emergency services rushed him to Sigatoka Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu, expressed his condolences regarding the incident, noting its tragic nature. He reiterated the importance of road safety, especially during the festive season, but acknowledged the challenges in ensuring all drivers adhere to safe practices. While police presence is a necessary measure, they cannot always monitor every road or driver.

The student’s body is currently at Sigatoka Hospital and is awaiting a post-mortem examination.

This heartbreaking event highlights the critical need for increased awareness and responsibility among drivers, especially regarding the safety of passengers. It serves as a somber reminder of the importance of adhering to road safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

As communities reflect on this loss, it may inspire a renewed commitment to road safety initiatives that can protect young lives. Engaging in educational programs and advocating for stricter enforcement of road safety regulations could help prevent such incidents from happening again.
