The body of a man in his 30s was discovered lying near the Naisogo Settlement in Colo-I-Suva, and authorities have concluded that it was the result of a hit-and-run incident. The Fiji Police Force reported that this tragic event took place in the early hours of yesterday morning. Following the incident, the victim was taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police have detained a man in his 30s who is suspected of being involved in the incident, and his vehicle has been seized for forensic testing as part of the investigation. This incident echoes a rising concern over road safety, particularly with the current road death toll in Fiji reaching 20, a slight increase from 19 at the same time last year.
In a separate case, a woman in her 50s succumbed to injuries from a motor vehicle accident that occurred along the Queens Highway. She was a passenger in a car driven by her husband, who reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into a lamp post. The husband is currently in critical condition following the incident.
Recent statistics indicate that despite these tragic events, there may be an overall slight decrease in road fatalities compared to the previous year, suggesting that ongoing road safety initiatives are beginning to impact driver behavior positively. Authorities continue to urge drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to road safety measures to prevent further tragedies, reinforcing the community’s role in promoting safer driving habits.
