Five individuals tragically lost their lives in a plane crash in the remote Morobe Province of Papua New Guinea. The aircraft took off from Wasu airstrip and was reported missing shortly after 11 a.m. local time on Sunday.

Local helicopter operator Jurgen Ruh, in collaboration with Papua New Guinea’s Deputy Prime Minister John Rosso, located the crash site on Monday morning, but rescue teams faced challenges reaching the area, which took an additional day. “Our medical team finally managed to get to the crash site of P2-SAM, and our doctor has confirmed that there are no survivors,” stated Ruh.

Deputy Prime Minister Rosso mentioned that the crash site is situated at an altitude of approximately 8,400-8,500 feet (around 2,560-2,590 meters). He noted the difficulties posed by the terrain, which is exceedingly remote and high, resulting in the need for specialized aircraft and equipment to access the area. Adverse weather conditions further delayed assistance on Monday afternoon.

An investigation into the crash is currently underway. Preliminary findings suggest that all passengers perished in the initial impact and subsequent fire. Expressing his condolences, Rosso shared that he personally knew each individual on board.

This incident serves as a somber reminder of the risks associated with aviation, particularly in challenging geographical regions. As authorities conduct a thorough investigation, it may lead to improved safety measures and responses for future flights in remote areas. Our thoughts remain with the families and loved ones affected by this tragic event.
