Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew has emphasized the urgent need to prioritize children’s welfare following a distressing incident where a toddler was found wandering alone on Laucala Beach Road in Nasinu. The child was taken to a nearby police station after two women discovered him alone. In response, ACP Chew stated that police will investigate all instances of child neglect and urged the public to help identify the toddler’s family. The child was successfully reunited with his guardians after the police posted about the situation on social media.
ACP Chew expressed concern over the recurring nature of such cases, highlighting that legal action could be taken against parents or guardians in instances of negligence. He noted the tragic outcomes of previous incidents, such as drownings and accidents, that could have been avoided with proper supervision. “Children are curious, and a moment of inattention can lead to tragedy,” he warned, urging parents to remain vigilant.
In light of the incident, Assistant Minister for Children Sashi Kiran called on parents and guardians to enhance their supervision of children. She referenced a recent case where a one-year-old boy lost his life after being struck by a vehicle while walking unnoticed onto the road. Kiran acknowledged the challenges faced by nuclear families but stressed the importance of finding support to prevent neglect and protect children’s safety.
