A post-mortem examination was conducted on the farmer, Marika Radua, who passed away while reportedly in custody at the Savusavu Police Station. Radua, a resident of Naviavia Village in Cakaudrove, died on Tuesday, following an alleged assault by a fellow inmate in the cell block.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander of the North, announced that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has initiated an investigation into the incident. SSP Baledrokadroka mentioned that more information will be shared once the CID completes their inquiry.

The Fiji Police Force’s initial statement indicated that Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew has instructed CID officers to look into the matter. It was reported that police swiftly transported Radua to Savusavu Hospital, where he was unfortunately declared dead upon arrival.

According to village advisory councillor Marika Sade, Radua was arrested on Tuesday morning after allegedly setting a family home ablaze in the early hours of the same day. The situation has deeply affected his family; Sade noted that Radua’s mother is currently in distress due to the loss of both her home and her son within the same week. She is staying with relatives away from their village for support.

This tragic incident highlights the importance of thorough investigations and accountability within law enforcement to ensure justice for those affected. As the community copes with this loss, there is hope for healing and rebuilding relationships as they support one another during this challenging time.

In summary, the unfortunate death of Marika Radua while in custody has prompted an investigation, reflecting the commitments of local authorities to address such serious matters. The situation underscores the significance of mental health and community support in the aftermath of tragedy.
