The National Occupational Health and Safety Services under the Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations Ministry is currently investigating the tragic drowning of a 50-year-old Japanese tourist at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka, which took place earlier this month. The incident, which occurred on November 4 around 8:00 am, involved the tourist swimming alone.
Preliminary findings indicate a need for a thorough assessment of the resort’s safety protocols related to guest activities, including supervision, rescue, and evacuation strategies. The National Occupational Health and Safety Services is working alongside local authorities to gather medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force, which will aid in the comprehensive inquiry.
Employment Minister Agni Deo Singh has emphasized the importance of the resort proactively identifying potential hazards and implementing control measures to prevent similar incidents in the future. “The hotel management must adequately identify all potential hazards and implement appropriate control strategies to prevent similar incidents in the future. The full report will be produced once the investigation is completed,” stated Singh.
Once the investigation concludes, the National Occupational Health and Safety Services will compile a full report detailing their findings. Furthermore, the agency is committed to conducting regular inspections of all workplaces, including resorts, to ensure adherence to safety regulations, with enforcement actions taken against any violations.
In light of this tragic event, it is essential for all resorts to review and enhance their safety protocols to protect guests better, thereby fostering a safer environment for both visitors and staff.
This incident serves as a significant reminder for the hospitality industry to prioritize the safety and well-being of their guests. Continued vigilance and adherence to safety standards are critical in preventing future accidents. The ongoing investigation promises to shine a light on necessary improvements within the sector.
