The Ministry of Employment’s National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) is currently looking into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 50-year-old Japanese national who tragically drowned while snorkeling near the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka earlier this month. The incident took place on November 4 at around 8 a.m., with the visitor reportedly swimming alone.
Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh stated that initial investigations suggest the individual drowned while partaking in the activity. The NOHSS is now conducting a thorough investigation to assess whether the resort had the appropriate safety measures in place for guests. This includes evaluating the supervision provided for such activities, as well as the existing rescue and evacuation protocols during emergencies.
To further the investigation, the NOHSS is collaborating with relevant authorities to secure medical and post-mortem examination reports from the police, which will aid in understanding the incident better. Minister Singh emphasized the responsibility of hotel management to identify potential hazards and implement effective safety strategies to prevent future tragedies.
The NOHSS conducts regular inspections of various workplaces in Fiji, including resorts, to ensure compliance with legal safety standards. Any instances of non-compliance are addressed with enforcement notices to compel corrective measures from employers.
While this incident is undoubtedly sorrowful, it serves as an important reminder of the need for stringent safety protocols in tourist activities. By focusing on improving safety standards, resorts can provide a more secure environment for their guests, helping to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
It is crucial that the investigation leads to actionable insights that enhance safety measures for all visitors, reinforcing the commitment to providing a safe and enjoyable experience in Fiji’s beautiful waters.
