The National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS) unit, part of the Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations (MEPWR), is currently investigating a tragic drowning incident involving a hotel guest at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka. Minister Agni Deo Singh reported that the unfortunate event occurred on November 4, 2024, around 8:00 AM, claiming the life of a 50-year-old Japanese tourist who was swimming alone.
Singh indicated that preliminary findings suggest a need for a thorough analysis of the resort’s safety measures, particularly concerning guest supervision and emergency protocols. The NOHSS is focusing on whether the hotel had adequate systems in place to manage guest activities effectively, including supervision during swimming events.
As part of the investigation, the National OHS Service is collaborating with relevant authorities to acquire medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force to aid their inquiry. Singh emphasized the responsibility of hotel management to identify potential hazards and implement comprehensive control measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
