The Ministry of Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations (MEPWR) in Fiji is currently investigating the drowning of a hotel guest at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka. The incident involved a 50-year-old Japanese tourist who tragically drowned while swimming alone around 8:00 am on November 4, 2024.
Agni Deo Singh, the Minister responsible, stated that preliminary findings have initiated an in-depth inquiry by the National Occupational Health and Safety Services (NOHSS). The investigation aims to assess whether the resort adhered to appropriate safety measures, including the supervision of guest activities and the existence of effective rescue and evacuation procedures for emergencies.
Furthermore, the NOHSS is collaborating with the Fiji Police Force to obtain necessary medical and autopsy reports to contribute to its findings. Singh emphasized the responsibility of hotel management to pinpoint potential hazards and implement control strategies to prevent future incidents. The detailed report of the investigation will be made public upon completion.
The National OHS Services conducts inspections across all workplaces in Fiji, encompassing resorts, to ensure compliance with legal safety requirements. They also issue enforcement notices to address any identified non-compliance, thus urging employers to take prompt corrective action.
This investigation underscores a commitment to enhancing safety standards in Fiji’s hospitality sector, ultimately aiming to protect guests and ensure a safe environment for all. As the inquiry unfolds, it carries the potential for leading to improved safety measures within tourist facilities throughout the region.
