A recent drowning incident involving a Japanese tourist at the Fiji Hideaway Resort in Sigatoka on November 4 has prompted a review of occupational health and safety measures at the facility. Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, indicated that the tourist was swimming alone when the unfortunate occurrence took place.
In response to this tragedy, the National Occupational Health and Safety Service (NOHSS) has initiated a thorough investigation to assess whether the resort had established proper procedures and systems to ensure guest safety. This inquiry will focus on evaluating the level of supervision provided for various activities and the effectiveness of rescue and evacuation protocols in emergencies.
The Minister highlighted that the NOHSS is collaborating with relevant authorities to acquire medical and autopsy reports from the Fiji Police Force, which will aid in their investigation. Singh emphasized the importance of the hotel management in identifying potential hazards and implementing necessary control measures to avert future tragedies. A comprehensive report is expected to be completed following the investigation.
This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of stringent safety protocols in the hospitality sector, particularly during recreational activities. As investigations continue, it is hoped that the measures developed from this incident will enhance the safety of guests in Fiji’s resorts, ensuring a secure and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
