Residents of the Suva-Nausori corridor are becoming increasingly frustrated with the lengthy traffic jams that impede their daily commutes. This issue has garnered attention from the government, with Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau addressing the matter during a recent parliamentary session. He acknowledged the significance of traffic congestion in the area, especially as it was raised by Opposition members, and committed to taking steps to alleviate the problem.
The government’s approach involves coordinated efforts from the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) as part of a comprehensive infrastructure development strategy. Planned upgrades are set to enhance major roadways, including a four-lane expansion of Ratu Dovi Road, Fletcher Road, and Princes Road, which are expected to significantly reduce congestion.
Furthermore, the FRA and the Public Works Department are looking into creating alternative routes, such as the proposed Suva-Nausori Regional Road, to alleviate traffic from King’s Road and Princes Road. Other projects, such as new connections from Wainibuku to Princes Road and from Davuilevu Housing to Wainibuku, are also in the works. The ongoing expansion of King’s Road will include the replacement of the Tamavua-i-Wai Bridge, supported by the Japan International Cooperation Agency.
In addition to immediate infrastructure enhancements, the government aims to tackle the underlying issues affecting Fiji’s transport network. In collaboration with the New Zealand Government, a Transport Master Plan is being formulated to address both short- and long-term challenges, which include managing the increasing number of vehicles on the roads.
To promote a sustainable and efficient transport system, the government is revisiting public transportation options and exploring initiatives such as electric buses. They are also planning a shuttle service aimed at reducing congestion in high-traffic areas, aligning with their decarbonization goals.
As the Suva-Nausori corridor continues to serve as a crucial urban center, these initiatives are designed to ease the daily commuting woes faced by residents. While drivers may have to endure traffic for a while longer, there is a clear pathway toward a more efficient and improved transport system in the future. This effort reflects a commitment to enhancing connectivity and fostering socio-economic growth for all Fijians.
