Traffic Trials Spark Mixed Reactions in Nadi Town

The Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) trials launched by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) in Nadi Town have garnered mixed reactions from local residents and commuters. These trials aim to ease traffic congestion through newly designed traffic flow layouts, which require the demolition and reconstruction of existing structures.

Currently, all traffic signals in the town have been temporarily deactivated. Delivery driver Rajinesh Prasad from Danny’s Pte Limited voiced his frustration over the delays caused by the new arrangements, impacting his delivery schedule and lunch break. “I have to deliver to a few places before coming to town, but due to the hour-long traffic, I couldn’t deliver on time,” he lamented.

On the positive side, local resident Penasio Bolekinaivalu noted some improvements in traffic flow and suggested that widening the main street would enhance the situation. He recommended clearing parking spaces, pot plants, and palm trees to create a more spacious road for vehicles.

Rima Chand, who commutes from Sonasali to Nadi, finds advantages in the two-way traffic system, mentioning that it could potentially save fuel for drivers. However, she did acknowledge the downside of experiencing lengthy traffic jams. In contrast, commuter Janend Ram expressed a preference for the existing one-way traffic system, stating that it effectively reduces congestion in the town.

The FRA’s reconstruction phase is set to take place from November 23 to December 8, 2024, followed by the trial of the new layout from December 8, 2024, to March 8, 2025.

Key adjustments in the traffic layout include converting Queens Road to single-lane two-way traffic, reconfiguring Andrews Road and Raniga Street to single-lane two-way traffic, and reversing the direction of Naitavo Lane to one-way traffic. Meanwhile, heavy vehicles will be restricted from the main street but allowed on Andrews Street, Raniga Street, and Ratu Naevo Road.

The FRA is encouraging residents to provide feedback on the trial to help improve long-term traffic flow and alleviate congestion.

This proactive approach to traffic management reflects a recognition of community feedback and the need for balanced solutions. By engaging with local residents, the FRA aims to create more efficient traffic systems that benefit everyone in the long run.
