Traffic Trials in Nadi: Are Change and Chaos the New Norm?

The Local Area Traffic Management (LATM) trials launched in Nadi Town by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) are yielding a variety of reactions from the community. Designed to tackle traffic congestion, the initiative involves modifying existing traffic layouts, which necessitates some structural changes in the area.

As part of the trial, all traffic signals in the downtown area have been turned off temporarily. This has resulted in both positive and negative feedback from local residents and commuters. For instance, delivery driver Rajinesh Prasad from Danny’s Pte Limited voiced his concerns about the increased delays, noting that the hour-long traffic jams impacted his delivery schedule and even cut into his lunch break.

On a more positive note, local resident Penasio Bolekinaivalu pointed out improvements in traffic flow. He proposed that widening the main street by removing obstacles like car parks, pot plants, and palm trees could enhance the situation further. Commuter Rima Chand echoed some of the benefits, mentioning that the new two-way traffic system could help save fuel for drivers, despite the downside of prolonged waiting times on the road.

However, not everyone feels the same way. Janend Ram expressed a preference for the traditional one-way system, stating that it effectively lessens congestion in town.

The reconstruction is scheduled to take place from November 23 to December 8, 2024, followed by the new traffic layout trial, which will run from December 8, 2024, to March 8, 2025. Key changes include converting Queens Road to single-lane two-way traffic, reconfiguring Andrews Road and Raniga Street, and reversing the direction of Naitavo Lane to one-way traffic. Notably, heavy vehicles will be restricted from the main street but allowed on designated streets, ensuring optimal traffic flow.

The FRA has invited residents to share their feedback, with the goal of refining the traffic management strategies to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion in the future.

This initiative represents a significant step toward modernizing urban infrastructure and reflects the authorities’ commitment to engaging with the community to create a more efficient transportation system. Through feedback and adjustments, there is potential for a balance between traffic management and the needs of commuters, ultimately benefiting everyone in Nadi Town.
