In the past 72 hours, a total of 934 traffic infringements were recorded, with minor offenses leading the list. This uptick in violations is attributed to the busy Christmas shopping period. Assistant Commissioner for Police Operations (ACPO) Livai Driu highlighted that many drivers were observed breaking simple road rules.
Of the violations, 440 were related to minor offenses, while 311 were for speeding. ACP Driu noted that speeding remains a significant factor in road accidents and urged drivers to adhere to speed limits. Additionally, 58 drivers faced consequences for careless driving, with 51 being charged for both failing to produce a driving license and not wearing seat belts.
Further, 10 drivers were cited for carrying excessive passengers, 8 for using mobile phones while driving, and 5 for driving with expired licenses. ACP Driu emphasized the importance of traffic awareness and compliance with road rules, stating that drivers should always have their documentation readily available.
In a concerning statistic, 23 drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. ACP Driu reassured the public that traffic officers will continue their vigilance on the roads, especially as increased movement is anticipated during this festive season. He encouraged drivers to plan their trips wisely, get enough rest, and avoid alcohol if they need to drive afterwards.
Checkpoints will remain active as part of ongoing safety measures. ACP Driu reminded the public that these checkpoints are in place primarily for their safety and security.
This article highlights the crucial role of awareness and adherence to road safety regulations during a busy holiday season, reminding all drivers to prioritize safety for themselves and others on the road.
