Traditional leaders in Tailevu have been urged to collaborate with the government in combating drug issues. During a talanoa session, Home Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua emphasized that Fiji lacks the resources to effectively manage the influx of illicit drugs. He encouraged traditional leaders to motivate the youth to reject drugs as a way to support the government’s efforts.

Minister for iTaukei Affairs Ifereimi Vasu echoed Tikoduadua’s message, calling on leaders to fulfill their responsibilities in safeguarding their communities. He noted that iTaukei individuals were often associated with various illegal activities and challenged leaders to engage in discussions with their people.

“It is crucial to speak the truth,” Vasu stated, adding that many pressing issues need to be addressed openly instead of leaving it to other groups. He stressed that these problems are often occurring within their own villages.

“We must start addressing these concerns at home, in our villages, districts, and provinces,” he remarked, encouraging open dialogue among kinsmen. Vasu warned that if these issues are left solely to the government, they would be managed strictly by the law. He called on the vanua to take proactive steps in addressing the significant challenges presented by drug-related problems.
