The President of Vanuatu’s Malvatumauri National Council of Chiefs, Chief Mehrimba Dangdang Paul Robert Ravun, has called on Prime Minister Jotham Napat to ensure that discussions regarding the newly restored chiefly house, known as the nakamal, occur within this traditional setting before any such matters proceed to parliament. This appeal came during a ceremony celebrating the restoration of the national nakamal, a significant cultural milestone for Vanuatu, following a fire that destroyed the previous structure in 2023.
During the grand reopening, Chief Dangdang expressed gratitude to the government, fellow chiefs, and the youth of Vanuatu, acknowledging their contributions to the new nakamal made “from the ashes.” He highlighted the importance of the nakamal as a ceremonial space and emphasized the need for traditional discussions surrounding important government matters.
A sacred fire was prepared for 20 days leading to the ceremony, complemented by traditional tamtam drums that resonated throughout the celebrations. Emphasizing unity, Chief Dangdang called for collaboration between the chiefs and the government, vowing to work together towards the nation’s development and future independence.
The opening ceremony also featured the presentation of traditional foods to the Prime Minister from various local communities, symbolizing the rich agricultural heritage of Vanuatu and reinforcing cultural ties among the islands. The ceremony saw an abundance of offerings, with leftover food testament to the warmth and hospitality of the occasion.
Prime Minister Napat, acknowledging the significance of Chief Dangdang’s appeal for constitutional discussion of matters within the nakamal, agreed to explore this initiative. This cooperative spirit marks a hopeful approach towards governance and underscores a commitment to maintaining Vanuatu’s cultural identity and traditional values alongside legislative processes.
The spirit of collaboration and mutual respect showcased at this ceremony illuminates a positive path forward for Vanuatu, where traditional values are intertwined with modern governance, fostering a sense of hope for a unified future under shared leadership.
