The Public Service Commission (PSC) has officially announced the conclusion of Shaheen Ali’s 14-year tenure as a permanent secretary, predominantly within the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, MSMEs, and Communications. PSC chair Luke Rokovada confirmed that Mr. Ali will not be receiving a new contract after a competitive recruitment process for the noteworthy position.
“It’s true that Mr. Shaheen Ali has not been offered a new contract,” remarked Rokovada. He further explained that there were several qualified candidates who applied, and one of them has now been appointed to the role. During his extensive service, Mr. Ali became one of the longest-serving senior civil servants in the sector, demonstrating a significant commitment to public service.
Despite the end of his role in the Trade Ministry, there have been discussions about the potential for Mr. Ali to continue his career within the civil service. “I have broached with Mr. Shaheen Ali the possibility of moving to another ministry in the civil service,” Rokovada stated, indicating that there may still be opportunities for him to contribute.
The PSC is set to announce the new permanent secretary for commerce and business development by the end of next week, ensuring a smooth transition within the ministry. While Mr. Ali has not responded to inquiries at the time of publication, his extensive experience suggests that he may still play a valuable role in government operations moving forward. This situation reflects the dynamic nature of civil service positions and the continual evolution of leadership within governmental departments, which can provide fresh perspectives and innovative strategies.
