Members of the Koroisau Co-operative in Nadi celebrated the realization of their dream this week. On Monday, Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Waterways, Tomasi Tunabuna, officially handed over a tractor with a three-disc plough, valued at $47,100, at Naboutini Village in Sabeto.

Co-operative chairperson Sikeli Tabua expressed gratitude for the timely government assistance. “We will maximize the use of this tractor,” he stated, noting that the co-operative manages two hectares of land cultivated with cassava, various vegetables, and fruit trees.

Tabua emphasized the co-operative’s goal to become the leading supplier of vegetables to local roadside markets and hotels by focusing on quantity, quality, and customer satisfaction. The new tractor will play a crucial role in achieving this ambition.

The support was provided under the Farm Mechanization Programme, where the co-operative covered one-third of the cost ($15,700) while the Ministry financed the remaining two-thirds.

During the event, Mr. Tunabuna encouraged co-operative members to embrace self-empowerment during this period of rapid development. He highlighted the importance of moving beyond traditional methods and collaborating effectively. “The concept of solesolevaki (working in groups) remains powerful today,” he remarked.

Tunabuna acknowledged the members’ patience while awaiting government assistance and assured them that their farming capabilities would now be significantly enhanced. “You no longer need to rely on others for land preparation,” he added.

Established in January, the Koroisau Co-operative has successfully utilized leased lands from the iTaukei Land Trust Board (iTLTB), with plans for further expansion in their farming business. The co-operative has 26 registered members, comprising 14 females and 12 males, who aim for financial stability and secure markets for their fresh produce in nearby resorts and hotels. They already supply goods to the Nadi and Lautoka municipal markets.
