Olympic and world champion Noah Lyles displayed his elite speed at the USA Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, finishing his 100 meters heat with a time of 10.05 seconds on Thursday. However, Lyles chose to withdraw from the semi-finals to concentrate on his preparation for the 200 meters, where he has previously excelled.
Kenny Bednarek stood out in the first round, becoming the only athlete to break the 10-second barrier with an impressive time of 9.95 seconds, securing his ticket to the world championships in Tokyo. Both Lyles and Sha’Carri Richardson are guaranteed spots in the upcoming men’s and women’s 100-meter events at the World Championships in September, thanks to their recent successes at the Budapest World Championships in 2023.
Richardson, who has been gradually increasing her participation this season, showed promise with her season-best time of 11.07 seconds in her preliminaries. Jacious Sears led the women’s heats with a time of 10.85 seconds, followed closely by Melissa Jefferson-Wooden at 10.86.
In additional events, DeAnna Price claimed victory in the women’s hammer throw with a throw of 78.53 meters, while Curtis Thompson triumphed in the men’s javelin.
The championships span from July 31 to August 3 at historic Hayward Field, promising to deliver more thrilling performances as athletes compete for coveted spots at the world stage.
Lyles’s decision to focus on the 200 meters speaks volumes about his ambition to reclaim his title and showcase his extraordinary talent after navigating through health challenges. This marks a pivotal moment, as Lyles aims to continue inspiring fans with his athleticism and resilience on the track.
