All discharges of wastewater into the Sabeto River have been stopped following a toxic spill that has resulted in the death of fish and sparked widespread public concern. The Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources (MLMR) confirmed this drastic measure as it initiates an investigation into the unlawful release of untreated wastewater by Lion One Metals Ltd on May 22. This event has been identified as a serious breach of environmental regulations.

The spill, which contaminated a two-kilometer stretch of the river for four hours, has led to significant destruction of aquatic life. Minister of Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, emphasized that mining operations in Fiji must adhere to the highest environmental standards, stating, “Any breach, intentional or accidental, will attract the strongest penalties permissible by law.”

Current actions being taken include thorough water sample testing, with results expected shortly. Lion One has been barred from any further wastewater discharges during this time. The investigation will involve collecting and analyzing water and sediment samples, interviewing mine personnel, and performing a comprehensive audit of Lion One’s discharge systems. Furthermore, the MLMR has mandated an ongoing environmental audit for the next six months to assess and guarantee compliance with environmental protection measures.

The response from the community has been significant, with local groups expressing their need for better consultation and transparency. Some representatives, like those from the Yaubula Committee and Roko Tui Ba, have echoed demands for accountability and have called for an independent audit of Lion One’s environmental practices.

This incident not only reflects the urgent need for rigorous environmental oversight but also highlights an opportunity for improved collaboration between mining companies and local communities. As the investigation unfolds, there is hope that regulatory frameworks will be strengthened and that community voices will play a crucial role in ensuring responsible environmental management going forward. The ongoing commitment to safeguard the Sabeto River is a pivotal effort toward preserving the ecological health of the region for future generations.
