Tourists arriving in the Central Division are expressing disappointment over the condition of the beachfront, especially following the New Year celebrations. Guests at Pacific Harbour this week were surprised and disheartened by the state of the popular beach, which was left cluttered with litter after the holiday festivities.
For many, including those staying at nearby resorts, Pacific Harbour’s beach offered an ideal setting to welcome the New Year, with locals bringing food and drinks to join in the festivities. However, the aftermath revealed a shocking scene, with garbage strewn across the sandy shores—bottles, plastics, food wrappers, and other debris tarnished the area’s natural beauty, sharply contrasting with Fiji’s usual image.
Margie Spainhower, an American scuba diver and a long-time visitor to Pacific Harbour, voiced her displeasure about the beach and water conditions. While she has consistently returned year after year, she noted that the pollution this time was among the worst she had encountered. Ms. Spainhower reported accumulating trash on her dives, including netting, ropes, plastic items, tennis shoes, and even diapers, emphasizing the detrimental impact on marine life and the overall environment.
She remarked, “People don’t want to come here and dive and see trash,” voicing concerns that such conditions could seriously affect tourism if not addressed. Ms. Spainhower advocates for improved education and intervention to tackle the problem, underscoring the necessity for awareness among residents, their children, and even government officials.
The unsightly state of Fiji’s beaches post-festivities is not a new issue, particularly in tourist-dependent regions like Pacific Harbour. Although cleanup efforts often stem from local residents and community groups, the overwhelming litter following the New Year celebrations raises doubts about the effectiveness of current waste management initiatives.
This situation presents an opportunity for increased community engagement and environmental stewardship. Initiatives could be established to educate tourists and locals alike about the importance of keeping their environment clean, alongside organized cleanup events that not only restore the beaches but also forge community spirit.
In the face of these challenges, there remains hope that through collective efforts, both residents and visitors can foster a healthier and more vibrant coastal environment that enhances Fiji’s reputation as a premier travel destination.
