An American tourist and two foreign residents of Fiji are among a group of seven individuals who have fallen ill after consuming cocktails at a resort. Currently, four Australian nationals are in critical condition following suspected alcohol poisoning.

According to reports, among the Australians, a 56-year-old woman is under close monitoring in the hospital, while a 19-year-old is experiencing severe medical complications. Two additional Australian women, aged 49 and 18, are also in critical condition but not in as grave a state.

Efforts are underway by local authorities to determine whether New Zealanders were also impacted by this incident. Investigators from the health ministry and police are evaluating the situation, though the specific cause of the illnesses remains unknown. It is confirmed that the group consumed cocktails at the resort’s bar on the Coral Coast.

The individuals in critical condition are currently located at Lautoka Hospital, which is approximately three and a half hours from the Warwick Resort where they stayed. An update on their condition is anticipated later today.

This alarming incident raises concerns for tourism stakeholders in Fiji, as the economy heavily relies on this sector. Experts believe that immediate precautionary measures will be implemented to prevent any further escalation, aiming to ensure the safety and well-being of guests.

It’s worth noting that this incident closely follows a tragic occurrence in Laos, where methanol poisoning led to multiple fatalities among tourists. Authorities are likely to reflect on these events and enhance safety protocols across the region.

In light of this situation, we can remain hopeful that the health outcomes of those affected will improve, and that tourism authorities will take swift action to protect future visitors.
