An American tourist and two foreign residents of Fiji have been part of a group of seven individuals who became ill after consuming cocktails at a resort. Four Australians are currently in critical condition in the hospital due to suspected alcohol poisoning.
Reports indicate that a 56-year-old Australian woman is under constant medical monitoring while a 19-year-old is facing severe health complications. Additionally, two other Australian women, aged 49 and 18, are also critically ill, although their conditions are somewhat less severe.
Efforts are underway by authorities to determine whether any New Zealanders have been affected, with inquiries made to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Investigations by health officials and police are ongoing, but the specifics surrounding the cause of the illness remain unclear. It has been confirmed, however, that the individuals had cocktails at the resort bar.
The four critically ill Australians have been transported to Lautoka Hospital, located approximately three and a half hours from the Warwick Resort on Fiji’s Coral Coast. A health ministry update is anticipated later today.
Fiji journalist Mereoni Mili expressed that the situation is concerning for health authorities, particularly given the country’s economy’s heavy reliance on tourism. There is a heightened focus on ensuring such incidents do not escalate further.
This incident occurs shortly after a tragic episode of methanol poisoning in Laos that resulted in the deaths of several tourists, which has raised alarm regarding the safety of alcohol consumption in international travel.
This situation highlights the importance of strict regulations and oversight in the hospitality and tourism industry to ensure the safety of all visitors. It is hoped that swift investigations and preventive measures can restore confidence among tourists while prioritizing health and safety. This incident could serve as a wake-up call for resorts to enhance their monitoring of beverage quality, ultimately leading to improved safeguards for all guests.
