Tourist’s Alleged Assault Sparks International Outrage

Police are continuing their investigation into an alleged rape of a 26-year-old Japanese tourist by an Indian national at a homestay in Nadi that reportedly occurred in late April. The victim, a teacher, was on her second night in Fiji when she claimed to have been raped by a man from Guwahati, Assam, India, who was also a guest at the same property.

The victim reported that the suspect had initially asked her to turn off the light in the dormitory where both were staying. In the early morning hours, she claimed that the man attacked and raped her in the dark dormitory. She documented visible injuries on her neck and leg as evidence.

The following morning, she informed a Fijian friend about the incident, who then reported it to the Namaka Police Station. The Police facilitated medical examinations at the hospital, which included tests for diseases and pregnancy, all of which returned negative.

The victim and her friend reached out to bring attention to the case, expressing concern that the suspect remains at large and could potentially harm other women. Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew confirmed that a report was filed and that the police are actively investigating the case.
