Amitesh Deo, the CEO and founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF), emphasized the urgent need for a shift in how the tourism sector addresses the waste management crisis. During discussions held in Nadi for Global Recycling Day, he highlighted that hotels and resorts are significant contributors to the waste issue and that changing the prevailing narrative around this problem is essential.
Deo reflected on past experiences where efforts to address waste management faced resistance, with concerns raised about the potential impact on tourism. He stated, “We should not be afraid to acknowledge waste management as a serious issue, as it is crucial for preserving the very industry upon which we rely.” He noted that greater awareness and involvement in waste management are necessary for the long-term sustainability of the tourism sector.
Some resorts have begun to engage with PRF’s initiatives, and Deo encourages more involvement from the hospitality industry for the right reasons. He expressed that when tourists come to Fiji, they do so to experience its natural beauty, not to contribute to its degradation.
This conversation aligns with ongoing efforts from the PRF to expand recycling initiatives across the region. Deo has previously indicated that tourism and environmental stewardship are intertwined, with sustainable practices crucial for attracting modern travelers who are increasingly concerned about their ecological footprint. He believes that collective responsibility from the tourism sector will not only aid in achieving better recycling practices but will also foster a healthier environment for future generations.
With these discussions, there’s a hopeful outlook for positive changes in Fiji’s waste management approach, promoting a culture of sustainability in tourism that can ultimately benefit both the local community and the natural environment.
