Tourism plays a crucial role in the economy, particularly in the Pacific region, as emphasized by Pedro Velazquez, the acting Head of Cooperation of the European Union Delegation. Speaking at the Regional Validation Workshop on Sustainable Tourism Enhancement in the Pacific (STEP), Velazquez pointed out that tourism is not merely about attracting visitors but also about creating opportunities for local livelihoods. He stressed that while tourism supports local economies, it is essential that the sector itself receives adequate support and is integrated with the overall economic framework of a country.
The workshop, organized by the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO), is focused on promoting sustainable tourism practices, particularly concerning consumption, production, and circular economy policies. SPTO Chief Executive Christopher Cocker echoed Velazquez’s sentiments, underlining the importance of collaboration and sharing diverse perspectives to forge a sustainable future within the tourism sector.
Earlier efforts in sustainable tourism include a scoping exercise conducted by SPTO in Fiji as part of the SWITCH-Asia Sustainable Tourism Enhancement Project, aiming to align the Pacific Sustainable Tourism Standards with national policies. This initiative is the foundation for establishing the Fiji Sustainable Tourism Standards, highlighting a commitment to ensuring the environment and local communities benefit from tourism.
Additionally, the Fijian government has partnered with international organizations, such as the UN Development Program, to bolster tourism resilience by integrating sustainable practices. This proactive approach not only supports local economies but also reflects a broader commitment to safeguarding the region’s cultural and environmental heritage.
As Fiji aims to reach its goal of welcoming one million tourists by the end of 2024, discussions at the workshop and other initiatives signify a hopeful outlook for the tourism sector in addressing sustainability while promoting local economic growth. This momentum reinforces the idea that with the right support, tourism can thrive in a manner that benefits communities, protects cultural practices, and ensures environmental stewardship.
