Tourism: The Key to Peace and Prosperity in Fiji?

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka emphasized that tourism is not just the backbone of the nation’s economy but also a vital link that brings together diverse cultures, nurtures mutual understanding, and encourages global harmony.

During his address at the World Tourism Day 2024 celebrations, Gavoka highlighted tourism’s significant role in providing employment opportunities for many and its essential contribution to the country’s development.

“Tourism extends beyond economic gain; it is crucial for connecting individuals, dismantling barriers, and cultivating enduring relationships,” he stated.

Gavoka pointed out that Fiji is dedicated to promoting peace through tourism, as demonstrated by various initiatives aimed at enhancing cultural exchange and understanding.

The government is focused on expanding tourism in Fiji through important initiatives, such as the newly launched ‘Na Vualiku Program for Vanua Levu,’ which seeks to enhance tourism in the Northern Division by improving infrastructure and showcasing local attractions.

As Fiji observes World Tourism Day, Gavoka urged everyone to reaffirm their commitment to using tourism as a catalyst for peace. He reiterated that tourism possesses the transformative ability to unite people, foster understanding, and contribute to a more peaceful world.

Looking towards the future, he called for a commitment to sustainability, inclusivity, and respect in tourism practices to ensure that the industry continues to serve as a unifying force.
