A multi-million-dollar integrated tourism development initiative is set to launch on Nasaulevu Island. This was confirmed following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the island owners, Nakovacake Development Trust (NDT), the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF), and the Asian Development Bank (ADB), focusing on a master plan for the island.
Nasaulevu Island features 747 acres of land located across from Denarau Port Marina and close to Fantasy Island. NDT chairman and Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander Joint Task Force Brigadier-General Manoa Gadai announced at Navoci Village in Nadi last Friday that the MOU represents the start of a journey to alleviate poverty and empower current and future generations.
He indicated that the project is anticipated to commence in May of next year. Brigadier-General Gadai noted that the preparation of the Revised Master Plan for the Nasaulevu Integrated Tourism Development Project is expected to take six to nine months, including conducting a feasibility study. During this period, the parties will begin discussions on a potential joint venture with FNPF and ADB, leading to a future joint venture MOU.
He emphasized that this project will be significant, offering a unique approach to tourism development in Fiji and the wider region. ADB director general Cathy Marsh stated that the initial budget for the master plan is set at $300,000, with plans to deploy specialists for development work before the year concludes.
Minister for Public Works, Meteorology, and Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau expressed the government’s commitment to supporting landowners in advancing their economic engagement. NDT secretary Anare Naivutevute highlighted that the master plan aims to establish the region as a hub for the South Pacific.
The ADB has shown interest in financing several components of the development, which include resorts, commercial properties, residential areas, and a cultural center. This cultural center is designed to draw tourists to Fiji, enabling them to engage with the local culture and heritage.
