The 2025 OneLove Touch Rugby tournament transformed King Charles Park in Nadi into a significant venue for promoting change, particularly against drug abuse in Fiji. Held under the theme “Fight against Drugs in our Beloved Fiji,” the tournament gathered teams, families, and supporters to advocate for a healthy, drug-free lifestyle for the future generations.
In the Men’s Open division, sponsored by Vinod Patel, Raiwaqa Insydout triumphed over Elementz Fiji, taking home a cash prize of $1500, while the runners-up received $800. The Eastern Hawks excelled in the Mixed Open grade, backed by Elementz Project Management, also claiming the $1500 reward. Meanwhile, 2Fresh Touch Rugby Suva showcased its prowess by winning both the Mixed Open and Mixed Masters grades, securing top prizes and demonstrating strong competition.
In the under-14 category, supported by Stone Masonry Service, Raiwaqa Flyers emerged victorious against Wesley City Roosters, claiming $500, with the Roosters awarded $200 for their efforts.
Danielle Keli, president of the Suva Touch Rugby Association, highlighted that the tournament’s essence extends beyond sporting competition; it serves to unite communities and advocate for positive change among youth. “Touch rugby is truly for everyone, transcending age, gender, or background,” Keli remarked. She underscored the event’s role in guiding young individuals towards healthier choices and fostering active engagement.
Coming together in events like this strengthens community bonds and raises awareness of healthy living. Keli emphasized that initiatives combining sports with social responsibility play a crucial role in addressing pressing issues like drug abuse, akin to similar efforts noted in previous sporting events aimed at combating addiction and engaging the youth through athletics. For instance, other local tournaments, such as those held by the Suva Kaji Rugby Association, signal a unified front in promoting drug-free lifestyles among participants.
The next round of the Suva Touch will take place on July 19 at Albert Park, eagerly anticipated as part of a continuous effort to engage and inspire fitness and community spirit through sport.
This tournament not only set a positive tone for sporting events in Fiji but also served as a beacon of hope, illustrating how sporting initiatives can lead to healthier lifestyles and a brighter future for the youth.
