The vibrant atmosphere at Albert Park on Saturday signified a successful gathering of the Suva business community, as 24 teams participated in the inaugural Suva Touch Rugby Business House Festival. This event, orchestrated by the Suva Touch Rugby Association, extended beyond mere competition; it aimed to foster friendships, maintain active lifestyles, and instill a sense of belonging amidst the fast-paced nature of modern life.

In the highlight of the day, the Tier 1 final saw Combined Accountants emerge victorious against Vodafone with a close score of 5-3, demonstrating remarkable skill and tenacity on the field. Additionally, Rolle Associates claimed a decisive 5-1 victory over Tower Insurance in the Tier 2 final, showcasing their dominance.

Association president, Danielle Keli, underscored the festival’s inclusivity, stating, “Touch rugby is a sport that’s not limited to a certain group or criteria… It’s family-oriented, making it a safe and welcoming environment for everyone.” Keli’s emphasis on promoting a healthy, active lifestyle through touch rugby resonates with broader community efforts in Fiji to engage diverse demographics in sports.

The festival was structured into two tiers, allowing teams to be categorized based on their performances, thus enhancing the level of competition. Participating teams were drawn from various sectors, including government departments and corporate offices, further evidencing the growing popularity of touch rugby in fostering camaraderie across Suva’s business landscape.

Funds raised during the festival are earmarked to support Suva teams as they prepare to compete in the upcoming Pacific Cup in New Zealand later this year, adding another layer of purpose to the event. Through initiatives like this, the Suva Touch Rugby Association is not just promoting sport but also building a stronger, more interconnected community.

This positive and inclusive approach reflects a bright future for sports in Fiji, showcasing how physical activities like touch rugby can enhance community ties while encouraging healthier lifestyles. The success of the festival lays a solid foundation for future annual events, signaling that sports can indeed serve as a vital unifier within diverse populations.
