TOPEX 2025: Fiji’s Next Move in a Shifting Global Trade Order

Global trade dynamics are undergoing significant changes, driven by geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and the emergence of regional trading blocs. In this evolving landscape, the Fijian business sector faces critical challenges regarding growth sustainability, competitiveness, and market expansion. The upcoming Top Executive Conference (TOPEX) 2025 aims to address these very concerns through a panel discussion titled “Fiji’s Trade Landscape: Opportunities and Challenges in a Shifting Global Trade Order.”

This pivotal discussion will feature notable figures including HE Peter Roberts, the Australian High Commissioner to Fiji, Mr. Saiyad Raiyum, CEO of PAFCO, and Sarvesh Dewan, Country Manager of DHL Express (Fiji) Pte Limited, with Ms. Jenny Seeto from the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation moderating. The panel aims to provide insights that are crucial for local business leaders as they navigate an increasingly complex trade environment.

The conversation at TOPEX 2025 will delve into the implications of adapting trade policies and the importance of market diversification, digital innovation, and value addition as pathways to bolster Fiji’s competitiveness. The panellists will explore how strategic policy reforms can foster a favorable environment for both exporters and investors, positioning Fiji to capitalize on opportunities within the rapidly evolving Indo-Pacific trade ecosystem.

Recent statistics from the Fiji Bureau of Statistics reveal an increase of approximately $F41 million (3.2%) in services exports during the first half of 2025 compared to the same period the previous year. However, merchandise trade figures indicate a persistent issue, with exports lagging behind imports—$F713 million in exports versus $F2.1 billion in imports at the beginning of 2024.

Experts argue that modern trade transcends mere economic efficiency; it now encompasses various non-trade objectives such as societal values, ideologies, and strategic identities. This evolution necessitates that Fiji’s business community remains vigilant regarding three main trends: the rising importance of regional trade agreements, the rapid evolution of trade rules based on sustainability and digital access, and the growing potential of the services and agriculture sectors, evidenced by a 20.9% increase in fresh-chilled kava exports in early 2024.

TOPEX 2025 presents an opportunity for stakeholders across industries—including education, government, and civil society—to engage in meaningful dialogue aimed at formulating practical responses to the challenges defining Fiji’s economic landscape. With a call for active participation from all sectors, the conference emphasizes the critical role of collaboration in crafting strategies for sustainable growth.

As Fiji ramps up its focus on inclusivity, digital commerce, and regional partnerships, the potential for a more resilient economic future becomes increasingly promising. By leveraging insights from TOPEX 2025, business leaders will be better equipped to navigate the complexities of global trade, ultimately contributing to a bright and prosperous future for Fiji’s economy.
